I have no defense for why Starbucks created the “Caramel Macchiato”. It really is the bane of most barista’s existence. However I LOVE how most people can’t pronounce this drink.

A latte macchiato. A glass of latte macchiato. Latte macchiato ( Italian pronunciation: [ˈlatte makˈkjaːto]) is a coffee beverage; the name means stained or marked milk. Marked as in an espresso stain on the milk used. It is a play on “Espresso macchiato” which is an espresso with a drop or two of milk or cream.

Our Caramel Macchiato ice cream was inspired by the popular coffeehouse classic beverage and features a coffee flavored ice cream with espresso flakes and a salted caramel ribbon. Besides the traditional macchiato versions, the espresso macchiato and lattè macchiato, caramel macchiato was popularized by US coffee chains. It is made with a macchiato with a milk base, but a lot sweeter in taste than the traditional taste. It is made by adding vanilla flavoring to the macchiato base and a drizzle of caramel sauce on top.

The year was 1996 and Starbucks had just introduced their new delightful invention: iced caramel macchiato. That was a breakthrough in the coffee industry and able to hit the zeitgeist. If a coffee house doesn’t serve decaf beverages, ask the barista to brew a latte macchiato or any other ristretto-based drink. Ristretto is an espresso made of finely ground beans and less water. To put it simply, it is a “restricted” espresso, meaning that you restrict the water supply and less water saturates the ground coffee, resulting in lower caffeine.

But what actually is a caramel macchiato from Starbucks? A Starbucks macchiato is a latte with foam on top and flavored with what you choose (most people stick to caramel or hazelnut). It is made like a latte but put into the cup differently.

Iced Macchiato: The iced caramel macchiato is a staple for many American coffee houses. It is made in the same way as the macchiato latte only ice. You should be able to see the separated ingredients through the cup. Long Macchiato: This is similar to a latte, and is popular in Australia. It is made in a tall glass with two shots of espresso, some foamed milk, and the rest of the glass left empty.

The terms derive from italian cafès and restaurants presumably from the early years of espresso machines.
