FAQ

Those who are looking for an answer to the question «Why is my internet dropping out every night?» often ask the following questions:

💻 Why is my internet connection dropping every few minutes?

The issue is usually caused by one of the three things – the old driver for your wireless card, outdated firmware version on your router (basically the driver for the router) or settings on your router. Problems at the ISP end may sometimes also be the cause of the issue.

💻 Why does my internet go out every night?

Your current internet plan might be a possible reason for your nightly internet mishap because it does not provide a speed that meets your needs. During high usage hours, your local internet service providers (ISP) might adjust your internet speeds to accommodate other users and reduce the internet traffic load.

💻 Why does my computer loose internet connection every night?

The distance between your computer and your wireless router may affect your internet connectivity… The internet signal can be lost due to the obstruction from walls, doors, and distance. Buy a WiFi range extender or move your wireless router to a more central location in your home can solve this issue.

Have run so many scans, run CCleaner, keep closing and opening the Internet, restart the computer which is an HP 2000 Notebook using 8.1, none of the actions have much of an effect. It's really just a waiting game as sometime between 9:30 and 10:00 pm the Internet goes back to performing fine.

Interestingly there's a new aspect to this problem, tonight after my internet predictably went out, for the 8th or 9th day in a row, I decided to check the gateway settings again. This time the gateway says there's an internet connection, but the Xfinity Network tab under connection>status says "Internet: Inactive".

If you encounter Internet drops, there are multiple reasons why this can happen. Here are just to name the obvious ones: Issue with the ISP’s infrastructure. You are connected to a bad Wi-Fi hotspot. Defective cable from your modem / router to your computer. Wi-Fi hotspot strength is insufficient – you may be near the edge of the WiFi network.

I think the first thing to work out is what the actual problem is. If speed tests and the latancy is good, then why can't you bring up websites? Maybe the DNS? Next time it happens, try entering in the IP for a website? IE 74.125.226.168 for google.com but take your pick. Also, see if other things work, like email or VOIP client (Skype).

Re: Internet dropping out at same time every night I suggest DavidM is along the right line. It's gonna be some form of electrical interference. Either in your premises, a neighbour or along the route your copper cable runs externally either overhead or underground.

I would factory reset your modem/router setup. This is done by pushing in the button on the inside of a tiny hole on the back of the unit. Press and hold button till modem/router turns off and then release. Once that is done, go in and change network name and password on the modem/router.

Your internet is slow at night due to network congestion. All your neighbors are likely using the internet at the same time, which will slow down your connection. You may also have slow internet at night if a lot of people are using your home Wi-Fi at the same time to stream, play online games, and do other bandwidth-heavy activities.

Tonight the first one started at 5.10 pm and lasted until 5.12 pm. Every few minutes the internet drops out for 2 to 3 minutes at a time. It finally stopped at 5.53 pm. It is now 6.30 pm so it seems to have corrected itself. It seems to happen only in the evening. My modem is a Telstra TG 587. Thank you.

Re: Every Night connection drops Go to solution This will happen momentarily when the modem is seeing an extremely low margin, that in effect reduces to a minus figure, and because it becomes a minus integer, the coding can't sustain the connection because the margin is in effect not measurable, so the modem reports a ridiculous figure and drops the connection.
